Banking in Nigeria has gone so modern that new technologies tailored at making transactions smooth and seamless are now order of the day.

As a customer of any of the Nigerian banks, staying up to date on certain information you need to run and maintain your account on daily basis is very important.

In this article, we will list the full list of transfer/USSD codes used by all Nigerian banks to make both mobile and physical banking transactions seamless for customers.

Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD)

Unstructured Supplementary Service Data popularly known as USSD codes and sometimes referred to as “Quick Codes” or “Feature codes”, is a communications service controlled by mobile network operators to provide mobile financial services on most phones, at low cost, and without requiring access to the user’s SIM card.

USSD codes allows mobile network subscribers that are without smartphone or data or internet connection to use mobile banking through code. USSD is similar to Short Message Service (SMS) but difference between the two is that with USSD, users interact directly from their mobile phones by making their own selections from different menu provided by their network providers unlike SMS message that they only send message and wait for response to be replied as SMS.

One unique feature of USSD is that during USSD session, the USSD message create real-time connection (interactive session). What this means is that USSD enables two-way communication of information, as long as the communication line remains open. And so both questions and answers happen almost the same time.

Usually, USSD codes start with an ‘*’ and end with an ‘#’, depending on the setup. Nigerian banks use these quick codes to bring banking services such as transfers, data purchases, balance checks, bills payments, etc. closer to their customers via their phone.

Quick Benefits of USSD banking

  • Allows you open an account from anywhere.
  • Service does not require both physical or online filling of forms.
  • No minimum opening balance is required to open a new account via USSD.
  • Unlimited access to your account at any time.
  • No dependency on internet or third party.
  • Available 247 (24 hours a day and 7 days a week).
  • Saves you the stress of visiting your bank or queuing up in the banking halls

USSD banking for First-timers

To be able perform a mobile transaction using USSD codes as a first-timer, you will be required to register an account and PIN code (either 4 or 5 digits depending on the bank involved) by simply dialling the various bank USSD code (as seen below) and following the screen prompts.

NOTE: The PIN code you use for your USSD banking should always be kept a secret because it serves as your security against fraudsters. You will also need it whenever you want to perform a transaction.
