For many, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) is synonymous with border security, trade facilitation, and revenue generation. However, beyond enforcing regulations and securing the nation’s economic gateways, Customs is taking on a more community-driven role, proving that its impact extends far beyond the ports and borders.
This shift was evident at the recent Customs Care Initiative, a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program designed to uplift underserved communities. The initiative was officially launched on Thursday, March 20, 2025, at Government Secondary School, Wuse Zone 3, Abuja, where over 1,300 students benefited from various educational and infrastructural interventions.
The event began with a procession from the NCS Corporate Headquarters to the school, setting the tone for a day of community engagement. People in attendance received free medical screenings, consultations, and tests, while learning materials were distributed to the students. A major highlight was the commitment to renovate the school’s auditorium, a move aimed at improving the academic environment.
Speaking at the event, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, emphasized that the Customs Care Initiative represents a long-term commitment to national development, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He reaffirmed that the initiative would be expanded to one school in every local government area, ensuring tailored support to meet each institution’s specific needs.
In attendance were top government officials, including the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, who commended the Customs Service for extending its impact beyond revenue collection.
“The Customs Cares initiative is a game-changer. It exemplifies how government institutions can integrate social impact into their core mandate. I commend the Comptroller-General of Customs for this visionary leadership, and I assure you that the Ministry of Finance fully supports this initiative,” he stated.
Also speaking at the event, the Minister of Education, Olatunji Alausa, praised the Customs Service for prioritizing education, a critical sector for national development.
“President Tinubu believes in human capital development. When we talk about this, it centers on the youth and our future. This administration’s top priorities are education, healthcare, social investment, and food security. Aligning efforts with agencies like UBEC and NSSEC will lead to greater impact and ensure that targeted interventions are based on data-driven priorities,” he noted.
Beyond education, the Customs Care Initiative is built on six fundamental pillars: Health, Education, Social Investment, Food Security, Creative Economy, and Environmental Sustainability. As part of its broader commitment to social development, the NCS also highlighted the role of the Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA) Skills Acquisition Center in Karu, which will provide vocational training to residents seeking new skills for economic empowerment.
This shift in approach underscores a growing movement where enforcement agencies take on a greater role in social development. As seen in other parts of the world, Customs authorities are increasingly integrating humanitarian and developmental efforts into their operations. Whether through educational support, environmental sustainability, or healthcare access, such initiatives contribute to a more holistic and people-centered governance model.
