A cargo ship operated by Evergreen Marine lost about 50 containers overboard while anchored at the Port of Callao in Peru on August 1. The ship, named Ever Lunar, was carrying around 7,000 containers when it began rolling heavily around 10:30 AM local time.
None of the lost containers contained hazardous goods. Port operations were briefly suspended while the containers were recovered using cranes mounted on barges. The port resumed activity the same day.
The incident came one day after Peruvian authorities closed all ports along the coast due to a tsunami warning. It’s unclear if the weather played a role in the container loss.
All crew members are safe, according to Evergreen, which is working with local authorities. The event follows another recent loss involving the Ever Feat, which lost or damaged 30–40 containers due to rough seas between Brazil and Uruguay.
Container losses at sea have raised growing concerns in the shipping industry. A new international rule requiring container loss reporting to the IMO will take effect in January 2026.
