The Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Arsenio Dominguez, is set to undertake a three-day official visit to Nigeria from October 2 to 4, 2025.
The announcement was made by the Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola, during a courtesy call on the Agency by the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Michael Gregory Oamen.
Dr. Mobereola praised the enduring partnership between NIMASA and the Nigerian Navy, describing it as a model of cooperation that has significantly advanced maritime sector development.
“The visit of the Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, is another demonstration of the deep and successful collaboration between NIMASA and the Nigerian Navy—one that continues to deliver positive results for the maritime industry and the nation as a whole,” he stated.
The NIMASA DG highlighted the tangible gains of this collaboration, especially the notable decline in piracy and maritime crime not only in Nigerian waters but across the wider Gulf of Guinea. He added that these achievements provide a framework that other government agencies and regional stakeholders could adopt.
According to Dr. Mobereola, the IMO Secretary-General’s visit will include tours of Nigerian Navy facilities as well as NIMASA’s operational infrastructure in Lagos—an indication of Nigeria’s growing role in strengthening maritime security and fostering international maritime cooperation.
In his remarks, Rear Admiral Oamen commended NIMASA’s leadership for maintaining strong ties with the Navy, stressing that the synergy remains vital for the continued growth and stability of Nigeria’s maritime industry.
