The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has released updates to the United Nations Bonn Climate Change Conference regarding the Organization’s progress in adopting a revised strategy for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from shipping.
According to the update by IMO, the enhanced strategy is scheduled to be approved during the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 80) meeting, taking place from July 3-7. This follows a prior gathering of the Intersessional GHG Working Group in June of this year.
In a statement delivered to the UNFCCC Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA), Camille Bourgeon from the IMO emphasised the necessity of mandatory energy efficiency regulations already in place and the Organization’s continuous efforts to ensuring that the international shipping industry assumes a fair amount of responsibility in combating climate change.
Furthermore, the IMO is actively exploring ways to incentivise the availability of sustainable, low and zero-carbon marine fuels and technologies in the near future. Simultaneously, it aims to provide support to developing nations, particularly Small Island Developing States and Least Developed Countries. This will help ensure a just and equitable transition to low-carbon shipping, and seeks to capitalise on the development opportunities arising from the decarbonisation of the maritime sector.
